The extraordinary Plenary in Alcorcón reveals political tensions regarding the future of the C-5 Cercanías line. The PP criticises the lack of investments, while the local Government proposes free transport during the works.
The situation of public transport in Alcorcón is at the centre of political debate following an extraordinary Plenary that took place this morning. The C-5 Cercanías line has been subject to criticism from the Popular Party (PP), which denounces a series of breakdowns and a general deterioration in railway infrastructure. In this context, the 'popular' have demanded an immediate response from the local Government and the Ministry of Transport to what they consider a "serious situation". During the session, a proposal was discussed to make other means of public transport free while the necessary works to modernise the C-5 are carried out.
The PP requested that this Plenary be convened to address the recurring problems affecting this line, including delays and technical failures.
“Citizens cannot continue paying for a deficient service,”
said Roberto Marín Vergara, spokesperson for the PP in Alcorcón. The original proposal included requesting an urgent meeting with the Ministry to ensure that promised investments are fulfilled.
For its part, the municipal Government, composed of PSOE, Ganar Alcorcón and Más Madrid, presented a comprehensive amendment proposing alternative measures. This initiative advocates for establishing the free use of the Metro and urban and interurban buses during periods of works or incidents on the C-5. Trinidad Castillo, the councillor responsible for Mobility, defended this proposal arguing that it is essential to minimise the economic impact on users:
“It is not fair for our neighbours to pay twice for the inconveniences caused by the works”
.
Despite these constructive proposals, the PP rejected the amendment presented by the local Government. Marín Vergara argued that accepting such a modification would mean dismissing all the work done previously:
“We cannot accept a replacement that ignores our legitimate concerns”
. This disagreement highlights the deep differences between the parties on how to manage public transport issues.
In addition to the debate on free fares during the works, other issues were raised such as the urgent need for a new stop at Fuente Cisneros and a park-and-ride facility near Alcorcón Central. These proposals were rejected by the majority votes of the PSOE and its allies.
Throughout the debate, Castillo recalled past incidents where inadequate decisions led to chaotic situations for users:
“What happened in Cuatro Vientos demonstrated how poorly made decisions can severely affect thousands of neighbours”
. The councillor emphasised the importance of prioritising effective solutions to avoid repeating similar mistakes regarding the C-5.
