A New Horizon for Chamartín Station
The Chamartín-Clara Campoamor station has undergone a radical transformation in its image and functionality thanks to an investment of 560 million euros made by Adif AV. This ambitious project has not only expanded the usable area of the building but has also modernised its infrastructure to accommodate the growing number of travellers. It is estimated that by 2025, the station will reach a historic record with 46.2 million passengers.
The new main hall extends along an impressive longitudinal corridor, measuring 18 metres in width and 225 metres in length. This design not only improves circulation within the building but also organises commercial spaces and boarding areas into separate zones. The renovation has added a total operational area of 27,000 square metres, including a recovered underground hall that had been closed since the 1980s.
The area designated for high-speed trains stands out for its open design, reaching maximum heights of up to 9.43 metres. This configuration allows for abundant natural light to enter, creating a more pleasant environment for travellers. Additionally, six modern fingers have been installed to facilitate access to long-distance tracks, equipped with mechanical ramps and elevators to ensure comfort.
It’s not just about aesthetics; the renovation includes significant improvements in energy efficiency. A photovoltaic plant has been incorporated on the roof of the railway complex for self-consumption. The LED lighting is automatically managed according to external conditions, thereby optimising energy consumption.
Aside from the renovated interior, the surroundings have also been transformed. Urban roads have been reconfigured to separate vehicular traffic from the internal flow of public transport. New facilities have been created, such as an independent luggage storage and secure bike areas, thus promoting the use of sustainable transport.
