A Challenge for Travellers in the Sierra de Guadarrama
The Community of Madrid faces a significant challenge in maintaining its infrastructure following the discovery of an eight-metre sinkhole on the M-604, a crucial road connecting the towns of Navacerrada and Rascafría. This subsidence, which occurred on February 23, has forced authorities to close a significant stretch of the road, affecting both private traffic and public service.
The closure affects a route of approximately 14 kilometres, from kilometre point 27.500 to 41.700. This situation has generated mandatory detours for motorists trying to access the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park or nearby ski resorts, which are particularly busy during weekends and holidays.
Drivers now have to take alternative routes that can quadruple their travel time. For example, to get from Rascafría to Cotos, travellers must pass through several municipalities such as Cerceda and Soto del Real, significantly increasing the usual distance.
Despite the inconvenience, the Transport Department has assured that intensive efforts are being made to stabilise the affected platform and reinforce the road surface. According to official sources, the works could extend until the end of March, although there is a possibility that this timeframe may be reduced depending on the progress of the repairs.
The closure has also impacted the bus service line 819, which connects Rascafría with the Puerto de Cotos during weekends. The Regional Transport Consortium has temporarily suspended this route until normal traffic is restored on the M-604.
Given this situation, authorities recommend that those planning to visit the winter resorts or the national park use alternative routes such as the A-6 and avoid the A-1 due to additional restrictions. Safety is paramount, and it is essential to follow official guidelines while these necessary works are carried out.
