An ambitious project for northern Madrid
The city of Madrid is about to experience a significant transformation in its public transport network. The expansion of the northern section of Line 11 (L11) of the metro, which will connect Mar de Cristal with Valdebebas, is underway and promises to improve mobility in this growing area. With a projected length of 7.8 kilometres and six stations, this new section aims to facilitate access to key areas such as the Intercambiador de Valdebebas–Ciudad de la Justicia and the Zendal Hospital.
As the project progresses, the Transport Department has decided to open a new public participation process, which will be available until November 5. This effort aims to gather opinions and suggestions from the public regarding recent changes in the project design. One of the highlights is the strategic relocation of the Valdebebas Norte station, which will now be situated further west to accommodate a future second stop, designed to serve the new shopping centre that will be built nearby.
To carry out this ambitious work, two specialized tunnel boring machines will be used. One will begin its work from the vicinity of the Enfermera Isabel Zendal Hospital towards Mar de Cristal, while the other will start from the western end of Secundino Zuazo Avenue towards the Zendal. Each tunnel boring machine is expected to make significant drillings: approximately 3.95 kilometres and 3.84 kilometres, respectively.
The schedule states that construction projects will be ready by December 2025, with technical approval expected by mid the following year. This will allow work to commence in 2027. Additionally, there is an interesting possibility that this section could be put into operation in phases; if one finishes before the other, it could start operating independently.
It is not just about expanding the metropolitan network; there are also plans to improve connections with Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport. The station intended to connect directly with Terminal 4 has been slightly shifted about 80 metres to ensure its compatibility with other airport infrastructures already under development.
As Madrid continues to grow and modernize, this project represents a crucial step towards a more efficient and accessible transport system. With careful planning and a focus on citizens' needs, the metro expansion not only promises to alleviate urban traffic but also to promote sustainable development in emerging areas such as Valdebebas.
