A new chapter of chaos in the railway network
The railway network in Madrid is once again in the eye of the storm. This Wednesday, users experienced a day marked by significant delays, with high-speed trains halted and delays exceeding two hours. The situation has generated a climate of frustration among travellers, who have reported a lack of information and effective solutions both at Atocha and Chamartín stations.
This new episode comes just as two months have passed since the tragic accident in Adamuz, where 46 people lost their lives. The Mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, has not hesitated to point to the Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, as the direct responsible for this crisis. In his statements, Almeida expressed his outrage by stating that "Spaniards do not deserve a minister who has lied with 46 dead."
Almeida has also raised critical issues related to the safety of the railway system. He questioned how it was possible that a break in the track was detected 22 hours earlier without Adif or Renfe taking preventive measures. "Spaniards are asking how this is possible," the mayor asserted, highlighting what he considers a serious irresponsibility on the part of the government.
As criticism mounts, the Popular Party has decided to take this debate to all municipalities in the region through extraordinary plenary sessions focused on the Cercanías service. Although Almeida indicated that they do not yet have formal confirmation about this initiative, he reminded that the City Council has repeatedly addressed the deterioration of the service and its implications for citizens.
Apart from chronic delays, Almeida emphasized that this problem goes beyond that; it is a true “safety issue”. According to him, “the Government's irresponsibility with Cercanías is not only endangering punctuality but also the physical integrity of travellers.” This statement resonates strongly among those who rely on public transport for their daily commutes.
As critical voices multiply and demands for clear answers increase, it is clear that the immediate future of railway transport in Madrid depends not only on quick solutions but also on a thorough and honest review of what has occurred since the fatal accident to today. Citizens expect concrete and responsible actions from the government to ensure their safety and well-being.
